Pietro De Scisciolo

​The biography
Pietro De Scisciolo was born in Terlizzi on 17 June 1967. 
He discovered and developed a passion for sculpture at an early age, spending time in his father’s stonemasonry workshop and studying the work of other local masters. 

He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari, graduating in sculpture in 1990 and pursuing his affinity for figurative art. His direct engagement with materials and command of technique have firmly shaped his desire to consider and define himself as a sculptor rather than an artist. 

He has won numerous competitions and public calls for the commission of official artworks, both religious and institutional, and his works are held in several public and private collections. His aesthetic research balances the playful and the poetic, favouring ways of working with and using materials that continue a tradition. 

Through a combination of visual languages, he creates engaging works distinguished by their effectiveness and lifelike quality, while also being ironic and provocative. His exploration of three-dimensionality takes the form of site-specific installations and monuments commissioned for squares and public buildings, including locations beyond the region. 

These works foster a fluid and authentic interaction with the natural environment and with the territorial, historical and social contexts in which they are situated. 

This can be seen in his projects for Apulia Land Art Festival in 2016 (*Gutta Cavat Lapidem*) and 2018 (*Heil oder Kaputt*); MACboat 2020 (*La palla di Apelle*) in Bisceglie; MABOS 2024 (*La stanza*) in Sila; Terrafuoco 2024 (*CHICCHIRICHI’*) in Terlizzi; ZNS Project 2024 (*Valori in corso*) in Palagiano (TA); and MIP 2025 (*Signum*) in Matera. Since 2012, he has taken part in numerous international sculpture symposiums and artist residencies. De Scisciolo works in his studio and workshop in Terlizzi. From 2010 to the present, he has taught at the Academies of Fine Arts in Bari, Lecce, Catanzaro, Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria. He currently teaches Ornamental Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Foggia.
